Botox® Injection (Chemodenervation)

As we age, the skin looses its elasticity and tone, as well as the baby fat underlying the skin diminishes. As a result the skin is concurred by the hyperactive muscle underneath, since each contraction of the muscle produces the skin crease (wrinkle) formation. With aging the wrinkles are usually more prominent and permanent, due to the lack of fat layer between the skin and muscle, as well as a lousy skin tone.

BOTOX® (Botulinum toxin) is a natural, purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium. It acts at the nerve-muscle junction by decreasing the stimulation of the muscle by the nerve. The end result is less muscle contraction, and thus less wrinkles.

However we believe that the BOTOX® is not a simple injection, and deserves careful attention. Dosing, and especially the precise targeting of the facial muscles causing the wrinkles are crucial. Too little of a dose will be ineffective, while too much of a dose may cause complete paralysis of the muscle, instead of weakening it. During the procedure, if the target muscle is not precisely injected, surrounding muscles may get paralyzed, causing bizarre facial expressions. Even though these side effects are usually temporary, carrying an unwanted expression on our face for few months will be very upsetting.
